As the name implies, it affects men and causes hair loss known as a receding hairline. The cause of MPB is believed to be due to a genetic marker that is inherited by slightly less than fifty percent of the male population. Hair loss can start as early as the late teens, but usually becomes noticeable in a mans 20s.
Normally, hair grows from hair follicles which are located in the scalp and other parts of the body. Current research indicates that hair loss in male pattern baldness is caused by individual hair follicles shrinking over time and eventually failing to produce new hair. The visible pattern of MPB is generally described as a M shape along the forehand, working its way back along the scalp. A second pattern can also start from the crown of the head as well.
The hair loss pattern is the primary means used by doctors to distinguish MPB from other types of baldness, which can be markers for other health conditions.
Male pattern baldness is not a life-threatening condition, and over time men have come to deal with it in a number of ways, including hair weaves, toupees, and growing hair out from the sides of the head and combing it over the affected areas. Some opt to simply shave the entire scalp. The bald look has become increasingly popular of late as several Hollywood actors and sports figures have established a shiny pate as their trademark.
There are two drugs widely available to combat MPB, minoxidil and finasteride which is included in Hair Genesis. Minoxidil is often referred to by its trade name of Rogaine. It is most effective when applied to the scalp twice a day and when used by individuals under age 40, or who are just starting to experience hair loss. It can take up to a year to show results and discontinuing its use results in any hair gain being reversed.
